Southwest Airlines famously advertises their “love” for their customers, with LUV as their NYSE ticker and their base at Love Field, Dallas. But that caring attitude didn’t extend to California nurse Brianna Solari, who was allegedly kicked off her plane because of her neurofibromatosis—a rare, incurable, but non-communicable genetic condition—even though the flight attendant didn’t let her speak with a doctor to explain. Solari said she felt humiliated and is considering suing the airline for discrimination.

Nurses might be the most trusted profession in the U.S., but those who volunteered as combat nurses in Vietnam experienced the same “bitter hostility” as many soldiers did when coming home. After the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was erected in DC, however, former combat nurse Diane Carlson Evans felt combat nurses’ work deserved recognition, too. It took a decade for her to successfully found the Vietnam Women's Memorial on the National Mall, and last Saturday, she got the welcome home she never had.
