Maternal Dark Zones

Though mental health care lags for everyone in the US, it’s particularly poor for those who have recently given birth. According to a new report from the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health, 70% of US counties lack adequate resources for maternal mental health, and 150 counties are in the “maternal mental health dark zone,” especially in Texas, Michigan, Tennessee, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Indiana. The CDC estimates that postpartum depression occurs in one in eight women who give birth.

Posthumous Honor

Nursing student Emily Clark may no longer be with us, but her legacy always will be, thanks to a new tutoring facility opening in Kennesaw, Georgia. Clark is one of five Georgia Southern University nursing students who died eight years ago when a tractor-trailer hit a line of cars on the interstate. Her family recently opened The Brain Station, a tutoring center that doubles as a coffee shop, to “bring Emily’s Dream to light,” according to the website.

The Great Lag

It’s not just American adults behind on their seasonal respiratory vaccines — it’s healthcare workers, too. According to recently published CDC data, only 17% of hospital and 23% of nursing home workers were up to date with Covid shots during the 2022-2023 season. Even flu shots trailed pre-pandemic rates: 81% of acute care hospital workers and 47% of nursing home workers got their flu shot last year, compared to 93% and 69% in 2019-2020

Spinal Tap Failures No More

With approximately 350,000 infant spinal taps are needed annually, and a 38% unsuccessful tap rate, SMöLTAP is a game-changer in infant healthcare.

SMöLTAP, created by doctors at Brown University & Hasbro Children's, is a device designed to revolutionize infant lumbar punctures that positions febrile infants in an upright and stable position, while simultaneously negating the need for an experienced "holder" (or two).

SMöLTAP reduces costs, enhances patient care, boosts tap success rates, while minimizes unnecessary hospital admissions. The current lumbar puncture procedure which involves awkward positioning, causes distress to babies and high failure rates.  SMöLTAP aims to reduce these failures to zero percent, ultimately preventing deaths from Meningitis. Its benefits include reduced variability, increased consistency, and repeatability, while aligning the spine with shoulders and hips.

Are you ready to join them on their mission to zero deaths from Meningitis, globally? Contact them today.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Grocery Tech

As nurses, we know poor nutrition negatively impacts health outcomes. Grocery tech companies are making accessing and affording nutritious foods easier for our patients. Companies like Instacart and DoorDash now allow patients to use FSA or HSA benefits to pay for healthy groceries delivered right to their door. This increases accessibility and convenience. Instacart also launched "food as medicine" partnerships with healthcare providers to offer grocery stipends to patients managing chronic illnesses. The stipends empower patients to conveniently receive medically tailored groceries to support conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Improved nutrition through these technologies can reduce hospital visits and support patient well-being. As advocates, we should educate patients on utilizing grocery delivery services and savings accounts to afford the nutrient-dense foods that aid healing and recovery. Innovations in grocery tech promote health equity by breaking down barriers to nutrition. This benefits our patients' overall care.

FINANCIAL VITALS WITH NURSEMONEYDATE

Invest or Payoff Debt?

Like many nurses, Nurse Mia navigated the common financial tightrope, balancing between growing her investments and decreasing her debt.

She kept asking, where should my extra money go? Here’s what she did.

  • Interest Rates Matter: Mia compared her debt interest to expected investment returns. When debt costs more, it prioritizes repayment, especially high-interest debt like credit cards.

  • Mental Peace is Priceless: Mia knew that peace of mind was crucial. The constant worry about her debt pushed her to put money toward reducing it while still keeping an eye on growing her savings for the future.

  • Two-Way Strategy: She cleverly split extra dollars between debt repayment and investments, ensuring a stable present and future financial health.

Key takeaway? Begin by eliminating high-interest debt, then balance between further repayments and investing. This path ensures future planning and a present unburdened by continuous financial stress. Learn more about Nurse Mia’s story here.
