A Year of Breakthroughs

2023 was an eventful year that brought us devastating humanitarian crises alongside significant medical breakthroughs. We now have the world's first CRISPR-based gene therapy, CASGEVY, for sickle cell disease; the first approved drug shown to slow down Alzheimer's progression, Leqembi; RSV vaccines for older adults and pregnant people along with monoclonal antibodies for children under 2; a vaccine for chikungunya; and a pill for postpartum depression. In 2023, AI also made a big splash, predicting pancreatic cancer three years in advance and diagnosing medical conditions.

Healthcare Trends for β€˜24

In 2024, we can expect generative AI, machine learning, and chatbots to continue to make headlines, revolutionizing diagnostics and treatments and taking over those administrative tasks that keep you from patient care. We’ll likely see the continued expansion of telehealth, with services becoming more accessible and comprehensive and the use of blockchain technology for cybersecurity. Other tech, including genomic medicine, wearable devices, virtual reality, and 3D printing, will offer more personalized care for mental health and pain management. 2024 may also see a growing adoption of patient-centered care.

Doing Resolutions Right

Some 80–90% of New Year’s resolutions fail by February, with many not lasting beyond β€œQuitter’s Day” (the second Friday of January). Vague, unrealistic goals or those influenced by external expectations can lead to feelings of guilt and disappointment. Consider instead focusing on small, positive changes that activate the brain’s happiness advantage’ through dopamine. Gratitude practice, journaling, regular exercise, digital detox, and nurturing relationships are expert-vetted resolutions for better mental health. Stick to your resolutions through strategic planning, tandem goal-setting, progress tracking, habit-building, and self-compassion. Do you need ideas for nurse-specific resolutions? New Year, New Job? The Nurse Fern Origin Story

One day in 2020, I made a TikTok that vaguely referenced me working from home as a nurse and it’s all anyone cared about. At the time, I had a successful freelance writing career and was content working on my writing projects outside of my remote nurse hours.Β

You all changed that for the better!

I started sharing one job post a day (anyone remember the original Nurse Fern job board?) and received additional professional writing training for resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn profiles. It’s grown a bit since then. We share a lot more jobs, have do-it-yourself resources, and create an incredible amount of free content to help you figure out what’s next in your nursing career.

And this week is the two year anniversary of the release of the Nurse Fern resume template!Β

Ready for remote nursing? Through Jan. 6th we’re offering 20% off all Nurse Fern courses with code REMOTEIN2024.
