Solving Nursing Shortage Requires Better Immigration Policies

The US healthcare system must add at least 200,000 new nurses annually through 2026 to plug the nursing shortage. But nursing schools reject thousands of applicants yearly—mainly due to a lack of nursing educators—leaving hospitals to rely on foreign nurses. Unfortunately, foreign nurses compete for the same limited employment-based green cards as IT workers, lawyers, and engineers, yet they don’t also qualify for temporary visas. They have to complete the immigration process entirely overseas. See Time to learn more about this complicated issue.

Violence Against Kansas Healthcare Workers Now a Class A Misdemeanor

Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has signed a new bipartisan bill that increases the criminal penalties for people convicted of battery against a healthcare provider on duty. It is now a Class A Misdemeanor, carrying a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a $2,500 fine. Several weeks ago, Florida also increased battery penalties against healthcare workers. Kansas’ bill also decriminalizes fentanyl test strips, which should help reduce fentanyl overdoses.

Seattle Klebsiella pneumoniae Outbreak Claims Two More Lives

Beginning in October 2022, an outbreak of Klebsiella pneumoniae hit Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. The hospital is now reporting two more deaths from the outbreak, bringing the total mortality count to nine people. Virginia Mason says it’s unknown whether the bacteria caused or just contributed to the deaths due to the complexity of the patient’s illnesses. The CDC notes that healthy people usually don’t get infected with Klebsiella. To date, the outbreak has infected 33 people.

Fighting Institutional Betrayal With Courage

Institutional betrayal occurs when institutions fail the people they were meant to protect. It is the failure to prevent or respond supportively to wrongdoings within the institution when there is an expectation of protection. This concept of institutional betrayal allows us to practice institutional courage.

The Center for Institutional Courage describes institutional courage as:

  • An institution’s commitment to seek truth and engage in moral action, despite the unpleasantness, risk, and short-term cost.

  • A pledge to protect and care for those who depend on the institution.

  • A compass focusing on the common good of individuals, institutions, and in turn, the world.

  • A force transforming people and institutions into more accountable, equitable, effective spaces.

Institutional courage lives in our dialogue with peers, colleagues, and leaders. Institutional courage creates policy change even though “we have always done it this way.” How can you contribute to a culture of courage?
