Nurses Face Insurance Penalties

Fresh off a contract win, nurses at Brigham and Women’s Hospital face potential tax penalties after discovering two insurance plans offered through Harvard Pilgrim and Blue Cross Blue Shield don’t meet Massachusetts’ Minimum Creditable Coverage requirements, which prohibit out-of-pocket costs for preventive care. The Massachusetts Nurses Association criticized the hospital for notifying nurses too late and causing widespread confusion. Nurses are now asking the hospital to apply for waivers and cover any penalties, arguing that the issue reflects inadequate support from management.

More Hawaiʻi Nurses Ready to Strike

Earlier this month, we told you about how 600 nurses on Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi secured a new contract after much hullabaloo. Hundreds of nurses and health care workers on the islands of Maui and Lanaʻi are now planning to hold a 3-day strike next month. Nurses contest unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios, which have left them burnt out, and are also pushing for better wages. The nurses’ union, United Nurses and Health Care Employees of Hawaiʻi, has been bargaining with Kaiser Permanente’s Maui Health since July.

Remembering the Person Behind ORT

Dr. Richard Cash, a public health pioneer who helped develop oral rehydration therapy, died at 83 from brain cancer last week. His simple and effective treatment for cholera and diarrhea has saved millions of lives since its inception in the late 1960s. After joining Harvard’s faculty in 1977, Cash dedicated himself to teaching and promoting affordable health solutions tailored to local situations. He is remembered for his humility, kindness, commitment, and respect for local cultures.

From Concept to Impact: Why You Should Apply to the ANA Innovation Awards

As nurses, we excel at identifying problems and potential solutions, but turning concepts into reality can often be challenging.

Hosted by American Nurses Association (ANA) and sponsored by Stryker, ANA Innovation Awards invites nurses with patient safety innovations to make a meaningful impact across six categories.

Here are some key reasons why you should consider applying:

  1. Funding.  ANA Innovation Awards provide $25,000 for an individual nurse and $50,000 for a nurse-led team in each category.

  2. Professional Development. Participating can enhance skills like problem-solving and project management, while expanding your network.

  3. Real-World Impact. Your innovation can directly lead to creating meaningful change in healthcare.

Interested in learning more? Check out the FAQ’s and rules. The application deadline is November 1, 2024, so don’t wait! Your innovation could transform the lives of both nurses and patients.
