Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

It would be a bloody mess if we actually removed what our Trivia Tuesday question is about.

🩸If we stretched out someone’s entire vascular system, what would the length in kilometers be? (Hint: If you convert kilometers to miles, it’s approximately 62,137 miles.) Click here to find out!

No More Toxic Fumes

It’s taken nearly a decade of advocacy, but California nurses will finally receive legally mandated protection from toxic surgical plumes or smoke released during laser and electrosurgery procedures. The plumes pose a substantial health threat to workers. The California Nurses Association announced that Governor Gavin Newsom signed A.B. 1007 into law, mandating standards for removing the smoke that contains a wide range of toxins, pathogens, carcinogens, and even malignant cancer cells.

Illinois on the Bandwagon?

Following multiple other states’ lead recently, the Illinois legislature is considering a bill to change nurse-patient ratio laws, Becker’sΒ reported. According to Advantage News, a joint state House committee met with officials in the healthcare industry regarding ideal staff ratios. Health and non-healthcare unions are pushing for reform in the name of better working conditions and patient safety. Still, opponents like the Illinois Health and Hospital Association and Sinai Chicago argue changes would increase costs.Β

24/7 RN… or Not?Β

A Biden administration plan to require stricter nursing home staffing requirements is getting pushback from Congress’s official Medicare advisors. They reviewed a proposed rule that would improve nurse staffing ratios and require all long-term care facilities to have an RN on site 24/7 instead of an RN or LPN 24/7. One expert said the rule was β€œinsanity” because many facilities can’t comply. STAT has the details.Β

FINANCIAL VITALSΒ WITH NURSEMONEYDATEβ„’

Savings Supercharged: $3,000 Difference

In nursing, we always seek the most efficient treatments for our patients. Similarly, with savings, why settle for the bare minimum? While most savings accounts crawl at a meager 0.43% APY, a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA) is like the IV drip of the financial world, giving your savings an energizing boost with rates as mighty as 4% APY!

Picture Nurse Irene. Tired of her savings gathering mere pennies, she opted for a HYSA. With a dedicated deposit of $500 every month, over five years, she watched her savings grow exponentially, pocketing an extra $3,000!

Nurses, it's not just about setting money aside; it's where and how you let it flourish. Curious about Nurse Irene's success? Dive into my video here, teaching you how to start your financial transformation next.

TECH TUESDAYΒ WITH NURSE MANNY

Palantir

A controversial data analytics company, Palantir, is vying for a huge contract with Britain's National Health Service. Palantir started advising the NHS on vaccine rollout logistics during Covid. Now, it wants a five year, nearly $580 million deal to overhaul the NHS's data systems.

Some worry this centralizes sensitive health data with a private company known for working with US spy agencies. But Palantir claims it would only provide the software, not collect the data itself. Supporters say Palantir's tech could cut waiting times and improve care coordination. Its tools have already helped some UK hospitals reduce appointment backlogs.

As nurses, we know robust data and coordination enable better care. However, we must ensure transparency on what patient information is shared and patient opt-out rights. This merits close attention. We want real improvements, not just lucrative deals for tech firms. Public health systems exist to serve people first, not corporate profit. Let's monitor this news and speak up if needed to protect patients.
