Today is the 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania. It’s a day to remember the tragic losses as well as the unparalleled bravery of all those who selflessly stepped forward to answer the call for help. While the day lives in infamy, it is never far from memory. Team TNB extends our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved as well as our gratitude to heroes that helped our nation step out of the dark and back into the light.

Bring Back Boomerangs

A boomerang nurse is one who is interested in returning to a full-time nursing position after spending time taking travel gigs during the pandemic — a trend hospitals started reporting in May. According to Wolters Kluwer, they make great hires because they’ve gained new experiences and skills they can bring back to the hospital. And compared with newbies, boomerang nurses are already familiar with the culture and work of the facility. They also may be more engaged than external hires.

When Will It Stop?

A male nurse at Rhode Island hospital was violently attacked by a patient in the psychiatry department last week, Providence, RI police reported. He is now in critical condition while the patient, who didn’t use weapons during the attack, is in police custody. Little details have been released about the attack, but the hospital is offering support to employees who witnessed the violence. Incidents like this are all too familiar: one in four nurses reported being physically assaulted in a 2019 American Nurses Association survey and are five times more likely than other workers to suffer workplace violence.

What’s Wrong With Her?

Five and a half years ago, Cora Weberg, a former Puyallup Good Samaritan nurse, stood accused of stealing narcotics and infecting at least a dozen patients with hepatitis C by using syringes on patients she had already used on herself. She was arrested at the Canadian border and released without charges but had her Washington license revoked. She’s now been charged with tampering with consumer products and has agreed to a plea deal with potential jail time, supervised release, and a hefty fine.

What To Do After A Remote Nursing Job Layoff

You’ve probably seen healthcare layoffs throughout your newsfeed, LinkedIn, and social media. While bedside nursing recruiters seem as desperate as ever, remote jobs are cutting costs and implementing new technology and artificial intelligence.

• If you expect a layoff, save an emergency fund and apply for other jobs now.

• A layoff is like any loss, and you will probably go through some of the stages of grief.

• Don’t sign any documents before reading them or consulting an attorney if you’re unsure about what you are signing.

• Apply for unemployment as soon as possible.

• Reflect and take a beat to realign your career goals with your next job search.
