Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Welcome back to Trivia Tuesday (aka the former Two-for-Tuesday fact break)! Here are your two trivia questions for the day:

Eight Nursing Students Sue Closed Connecticut Program

The Stone Academy nursing program shut down all three of its campuses in East Hartford, Waterbury, and West Haven, Connecticut in February because of β€œunqualified faculty” and β€œinvalid student clinical experiences,” among other issues, according to a state health department press release at the time. Now eight students have filed a class action suit against the for-profit institution for violating unfair trade practices. The school’s attorneys dispute the claims in the students’ 36-page complaint.

Long Covid Finally Officially Defined in NIH Study

A major challenge of studying long Covid is figuring out what actually qualifies as the condition. Despite moving at a snail’s pace, according to its critics, the NIH’s $1 billion long Covid initiative RECOVER has finally settled on criteria for the diagnosis in a paper published in JAMA May 25. The study uses a composite symptom score for any of the 37 possible symptoms occurring at least 6 months after a Covid infection.

TECHΒ TUESDAY withΒ NURSE MANNY 🤖

Suki AI

β€œI just love charting!” said no nurse ever. As value-based care (VBC) evolves, clinical documentation has become even more critical in ensuring and demonstrating great care has been delivered. Unfortunately, current EHR software can make documenting difficult and tedious, removing bedside staff from caring for patients. Suki, a healthcare-oriented AI voice assistant, shows promise in truly helping clinicians provide care. Think Siri, Alexa, or Google Assistant for the healthcare world; Suki can understand natural language, pull data from the EHR, and document. In addition, Suki’s ambient note-taking feature can generate clinical notes during patient assessment. While this, unfortunately, can eliminate the need for a scribe, I think it’s a good use of tech that can help clinicians rather than chain them to a particular workflow. You can see a demo of their software here. Suki is currently a physician-only product; as nurse documentation becomes a critical tool in VBC, I predict a nurse voice assistant down the pipeline.

DAILY DIVERSIONΒ 💊

Every nurse has some kind of special skill that makes them exceptional in one area of care. For Michigan nurse Donte Felder, that nursing ninja skill is providing a sense of calm to patients anxious about getting dialysis, earning him the Nursing Support Staff Helping Hands Hero Award from his hospital.Β
