Our guest of honor was Marion Leary, the Director of Innovation for Penn Nursing. It was absolutely amazing to see nurses come together to connect and mingle. Even cooler was that we saw our name on the 30’ big screen 😎.

Pennsylvania Nurse Charged with Killing Two Patients and Harming Another

Pennsylvania nurse Heather Pressdee has been charged with giving lethal insulin doses to three patients, two of whom were not even diabetic, at a skilled nursing facility. Pressdee reportedly cared for all three patients before they were transported to a hospital for hypoglycemia. Her charges include three counts each of neglect of a care-dependent person and reckless endangerment, two counts of homicide, and one count each of attempted homicide and aggravated assault. 

Planned Parenthood to Lay Off Dozens of People in National Office

Planned Parenthood will lay off 10% to 20% of its national office staff, or at least 80 people. It is looking to restructure the national office and focus on helping regional affiliates. The $70 million investment in affiliates will expand telehealth capacity, lobby in state and national election fights, and work to reduce reproductive health disparities for Black women. Union groups, however, have said that Planned Parenthood leaders are “pushing out some of our movement’s brightest minds.”

Ketamine Reaches “Gold Standard” for Major Depression

A new trial has found that ketamine-assisted therapy worked as well as electroconvulsive treatment (the gold standard) for treatment-resistant major depression in outpatients without psychotic features. The patients in the study were initially referred for ECT because they and their clinicians saw ECT as their best option. After three weeks of treatment, 55.4% of the patients in the ketamine group and 41.2% in the ECT group had a treatment response (a 50% or greater drop from baseline on the QIDS-SR-16).

Snack Time!

Are you feeling hangry? Self-care can take a hot second to nourish yourself even when you “don’t have time.” You are so not helpful as a nurse if you pass out from hypoglycemia, so try these instead!

1. Nuts or trail mix! Download my secret recipe here and customize it! 

2. Veggies and hummus or guac! You can put a little portion in a container like these or buy single-serving packs.

3. Yogurt and granola. I love the key lime flavor of skyr from Icelandic Provisions with the oats & honey Nature Valley granola bars broken up. It tastes like key lime pie! 

4. Apples with peanut butter are delish! Add string cheese on the side, and you are good to go!

5. Cottage cheese with fruit like berries or pineapple is heavenly and will keep you full.
