Need Those NPs

Research suggests more employers are searching for nurse practitioners than any other specialty β€” for the third consecutive year. Physician assistants and certified registered nurse anesthetists were also searched for more than primary care physicians. Salaries for nurse practitioners have increased 9% year over year (now $158,000 this year), making them a more cost-effective choice than physicians, according to a report. Nurse practitioners β€” which the US Bureau of Labor Statistics lumps in with nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives β€” have been especially attractive to retail chain’s care models, including at CVS, Walgreen, and Walmart.

Where The Money’s At

With an average annual salary range of $149,770–$208,000, chief nursing anesthetists are the highest paid among all nursing jobs, according to
nursingprocess.org, a nursing educational resource. Certified registered nurse anesthetist ($133,970–208,000), dean of nursing ($134,370–$252,920), chief nursing informatics officer ( $115,810–$217,990), and chief nursing officer ($105,950–$199,440) round out the top five. Of course, money isn’t everything. The site says that high-paying nursing jobs also come with long, grueling hours, emotional fatigue, and lots of responsibility.

A Strike Is Coming

On August 22, members of the Illinois Nurse Association plan to strike for two days at Ascension Saint Joseph-Joliet. The hospital has been contracting with a staffing agency to provide care during the negotiations and says it has been bargaining in good faith. However, the union contends that the hospital has been paying outside agency nurses at rates that the union has been pushing for. Due to current contracting rules, the hospital says that nurses who strike won’t be able to return to work until August 26.

Self-Compassion Drives Social Change

Self-compassion is an energy source powering our ability to fight for change. As the collective nursing profession continues to advocate for safer working conditions, self-compassion can help us cultivate the clarity and courage to stand up to oppression without losing ourselves. Self-compassion plays a vital role in the quest to end racism, greed, and injustice.Β

You can choose softness without condoning the realities within the US healthcare system. It is easy to make jokes about pizza parties, to go along with the majority raging in anger. It is much harder to dive into the softness, the tender side of self-compassion that feeds our fierceness and ability to fight for change. By pointing self-compassion inward, we can stand up for what is right while fighting for our needs and the needs of our patients without being overwhelmed.
