HUDDLE

Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

It’s time for another round of Mystery Diagnosis Monday. Today’s clues are:

🦠 Patients who have this condition have chronic alcohol intoxication, not from excessively drinking, but from an overgrowth of certain fungi in their small intestines.

🤢 Symptoms often include stomach aches and pain, abdominal bloating, difficulty concentrating, and even sinusitis.

🧁 Treatments include reducing sugar intake, refined carbohydrates, and yeast containing foods.

The Longest Waits

According to the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission, patients in Maryland are experiencing wait times for the ER that are longer than the national average, with some of the longest wait times lasting almost a day. Officials are working to better understand the whys behind it all, which appears to be due to many factors, including inadequate healthcare staffing, slow patient turnaround, and the number of primary care physicians available.

Protect Your Furbabies

The holidays can bring many changes to your home for your pets, most notably new things for them to gobble up without you knowing. For your pets’ safety, keep track of how much food you’re giving them and how quickly they’re eating it (unchewed treats can get stuck!). Keep an eye on the status of your tinsel and ribbons, fatty table scraps, and kids’ treats (chocolate!). Be mindful of the holiday plants you put out, as some, including poinsettias and mistletoe, can be deadly. Get more tips from the FDA here.

The Fantastic Four

A group of nurses from Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Hospital have rightfully earned the moniker given by their patients: “the Fantastic Four.” The four nurses were having a grand time on their European holiday when they came across a man who collapsed in a remote mountain cave. “Nurse mode kicked in,” and the superheroes got to work with CPR, giving the man space from onlookers despite language barriers. Thanks to the nurses’ quick work, the man could be air-lifted off the mountain and treated at a local hospital.

THAT REMOTE LIFE WITH NURSE FERN

A Day In The Life of A Utilization Management Nurse

Utilization management is a central sector in healthcare, but it’s not something most nursing schools teach. Utilization review, or utilization management, is the process of determining if an insurance plan member can receive reimbursement for a specific healthcare service.

Here is how one UM nurse describes a day:

1. She is hard-wired into the internet and to my work phone, so she logs in every morning and remains at her desk for most of the day.

2. She selects cases to work from a large queue and is expected to complete between eight and 16 cases daily.

3. She reviews the clinical documentation compared to the provided insurance criteria to determine if the reimbursement will be authorized.

With UM being an abundant source of remote nursing roles, it’s worth seeing if it interests you. Want to learn more about utilization management? Read the full article here.
