Litigation-Happy Hospital

A KHF and NPR investigation revealed an alarming debt collection system by Oklahoma’s McAlester Hospital. Over the last three decades, the hospital and an affiliated clinic have filed close to 5,000 debt collection cases against its patients, benefiting the hospital, the father-daughter law firm of Hackler & Hackler, and various debt collection agencies. A municipal judge, Deborah Hackler, hears traffic cases that sometimes involve people she sued for McAlester, and the Hacklers’ debt collection cases were heard for years by retired Judge James Bland, who now sits on the hospital’s board. The hospital’s CEO and the city’s mayor (who appoints the board members) claim ignorance of these lawsuits.

We’re Still At the Top

For the 22nd consecutive year, nurses have remained the most trusted profession measured in Gallup’s Honesty and Ethics poll, though trust has dropped seven percentage points from its 2019 peak. Several other medical professions also rank in the top 10, including veterinarians (#2), dentists (#4), medical doctors (#5), pharmacists (#6), psychiatrists (#9), and chiropractors (#10). Perhaps unsurprisingly, you’ll find politicians (senators and members of Congress), car salespeople, advertisers, stockbrokers, and insurance salespeople at the other end of the trust spectrum.Β

Controversial Closure

New York is considering significant service reductions or the closure of University Hospital at Downstate in Brooklyn β€” New York City’s only state-run medical hospital β€” due to low patient numbers, deficits of about $100 million per year, and building issues. The plan involves transferring inpatient care to other hospitals, especially to the city-run Kings County Hospital across the street. This move would free up funding, which the university’s chancellor says would be used for a student center and institute for studying health disparities. However, the healthcare workers’ union sees this as weakening the institution and harming the community.

Is it Burnout or Just a Bad Day?

In the demanding world of nursing, knowing the difference between burnout and run-of-the-mill fatigue is crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Burnout isn’t just tiredness; it’s a deep-rooted sense of emotional exhaustion & depersonalization. If work = dread, personal fulfillment fades, and detachment sets in, it might be burnout. (Take my free quiz here to find out!)

Conversely, fatigue is a temporary tiredness fixable with rest activities. Signs of burnout persist even after a good night’s sleep or usual recharge go-tos. Pay attention to your emotions – if joy at work is replaced by cynicism & resentment, it’s time to address burnout.

Recognizing burnout is the first step towards reclaiming balance in your professional and personal life. Need support & clarity? – Join the 100+ other nurses/NPs in my signature program, The Resilient Nurse Roadmap. Book a free call with me here to learn more!Β Β
