HANDOFF

Unprepared for a Quake

Earthquakes are the hardest natural disasters to predict, yet they cause some of the worst damage. But structures can be updated to meet safety standards for earthquakesβ€”and most California hospitals haven't done so. Now a California bill would extend their deadline for meeting those standards until 2035 instead of 2030. With a major quake likely to occur before 2032, California nurses are calling on Gov. Newsom to veto the bill and not let hospitals off the hook for earthquake safety.

Vaping Rates Plummet

A record-high one in five American kids was vaping in 2019, but there’s been tremendous progress in the five years since then. Just 6% of middle and high school students used e-cigarettes in 2024, about one third of the peak just before the pandemic and four percentage points less than last year. The decline is a public health win that follows multiple actions by the FDA to crack down on e-cigarette manufacturers and vape shops.

TikTok Toxins

TikTok loves few things as much as a new health or nutrition fad, despite the inaccuracy of most of this information on the platform. Now a recent study reports on the potential dangers of six different herbal supplements that have become particularly popular on TikTok. Three of the supplementsβ€”green tea extract, turmeric, and ashwagandhaβ€”can be toxic to the liver in large enough amounts. Learn more about the other supplements and how much it takes to cause harm.

MYSTERY Dx MINUTE WITH NURSE KEL

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Welcome back for another Mystery Diagnosis Minute! I thought I’d focus our MDM’s for September on some topics that I’ll be teaching my LPN and RN students in their fall classes. It’s new material for them and a great review for us!Β Β

🤔 This neurological birth defect is characterized by a sac-like protrusion that contains brain tissue, meninges, and CSF in an opening in the skull.Β

🤔 The protrusion from the skull is most commonly seen at the back of the head, but can also be in the occipital or suboccipital regions, or in the anterior portion of the head.Β

🤔 This protrusion is usually present at birth and is the result of the incomplete closure of the neural tube, which later becomes the brain and spinal cord.Β
