The belief that the full moon influences odd behavior is so strong that some hospitals increase staffing for full moons like last Saturday’s Snow Moon. Research long ago showed the full moon theory to be bunk, but health security company Canopy recently discovered that hospital workers use panic buttons to call for help 9% more often during full moons. The findings don’t necessarily mean nurse burnout is definitely highest in those states, but the Google trends could reveal a call for help, especially when some Arizona nurses are already caring for a higher ratio of patients than recommended, and shortages are high in those states. Welcome Aboard

When onboarding a new ICU nurse, how do you know what skills they already have and what knowledge gaps might need some refreshing? That’s the problem a new tool from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses aims to solve. A new online AACN Knowledge Assessment Tool aims to help “hospitals better identify knowledge gaps and educational needs of nurses new to the unit or critical care or progressive care,” an AACN release states.
