REWARDing Military Nurses

A new bill hopes to address the US military nursing shortage by encouraging nurses to get the education they need to advance through the ranks. The Retain Educated Workers and Registered Nurses Developing Experience Act, or REWARD Experience Act, would let military medical facility hiring managers waive nurse experience requirements. At the same time, they get the further education they need to have the same salary opportunities as other RNs with more experience.

A New Union?

The nurses at Indiana University Health and Methodist hospitals are organizing in hopes that a union can help improve poor conditions resulting from the low staffing that began during the pandemic. About 300 nurses at the two hospitals — which will likely consolidate in 2027 — are interested in creating a union. The union would not include travel nurses, who, along with international nurses, have been filling in the gaps at IU Health.

Sauna Satisfaction

Despite the cold, long, dark winter nights, Finland consistently ranks as having the happiest people on the planet. It’s possible one reason for the excess of happiness is the Nordic country’s sauna culture, suggests a feature in the Guardian. The country of 5.6 million people has about 3.3 million saunas, and the “steamy, spiritual and stress-busting” experience of one is like an “intense hug” that brings people together. Find out what makes the “sauna capital of the world” so unique.

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

A Little Patch of Promise

Ultrasound shows promise for early diagnosis and monitoring of diseases, but conventional rigid probes have limitations. Excitingly, researchers have developed a stretchable, conformable ultrasound patch for volumetric imaging of organs like the bladder. This innovative patch contains sensor arrays embedded in a flexible substrate. It molds to the body using a novel piezoelectric ceramic material, allowing robust and spatially accurate monitoring during deformation.

Unlike standard probes requiring manipulation by a technician, this patch enables hands-free, continuous visualization of bladder volume. A pilot study showed comparable accuracy to clinical ultrasound equipment without ultrasound gel or manual repositioning. This suggests significant potential to improve infection control and streamline nursing workflows. The study also demonstrated the patch's ability to track anatomical changes over time. From post-void residual bladder assessment to tracking treatment response, this conformable technology may soon give nurses non-invasive, seamless insights. As the ultrasound patch advances toward commercial availability, I eagerly anticipate seeing it augment bedside care through painless, sophisticated physiological surveillance.
