A Nurse to the Rescue
Leigh Ann Sondrup, an RN at Valleywise Health in Arizona, was on her way home from work when she encountered a bad car crash involving a cement truck. She stopped to survey the scene and found the driver trapped inside the truck and bleeding severely from the foot and leg. The driver was fearful he would die, but Sondrup assured him that wouldnβt happen that day. She asked for a belt from bystanders and applied it as a tourniquet, helping him remain stable until the ambulances arrived on the scene.

An Explosive Lawsuit
David White, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, is suing Hartford HealthCare, claiming he suffered injuries from a spider limb positioner device that exploded or separated under pressure. Heβs seeking lost wages and $15,000 in damages for MidState Medical Centerβs negligence, which resulted in him experiencing severe injuries,
including traumatic compartment syndrome, flesh-eating bacteria, sepsis, liver shock, and anxiety, among other things. But the healthcare system said it lacks information to admit or deny the allegations, and the burden of proof falls on White and his attorney.

Not So Sanguine Blood Donation Policies
Men who have sex with men were initially banned from giving blood for life; newer (still discriminatory) FDA policies required them to remain celibate for a year to donate, with the deferral then dropping to three months in 2020. The FDA now excludes anyone with a new sexual partner, more than one sexual partner, or anal sex in the past
three months. Some experts, however, say it doesnβt go far enough given that the exclusions apply to people on PrEP, who undergo regular STI tests and know more about their sexual health than those who donβt.

Burnout Prevention
Hereβs the three things I would tell new nurses that would have saved me from burnout.
You have time; stop saying you donβt. Start looking at where your time is going and do what matters to you without complaining. You are letting life pass you by. Stop overextending yourself.
You are so afraid of what other people think, and as a result, you are taken advantage of. You deserve better. Use your voice, set boundaries, and stay strong.
You think you donβt know enough, arenβt good enough, and worry about this a lot. I promise you; you are doing better than you think. You are successful, and there are so many people who are proud of you just as you are.
