A UK nurse is out of a job after a sexual tryst with a male patient led to the patient’s death by cardiac arrest. Penelope Williams had intercourse with a patient in his car at a parking lot near Spire Hospital in Wrexham, North Wales. While copulating, the patient started having chest pain and died of “heart failure and chronic
kidney disease triggered by a medical episode.” A tribunal fired Williams for failing to disclose her relationship and failing to immediately call for help even after a colleague instructed her to.

Rapid Covid Detection

Researchers at Washington University in St. Louis have developed an air sensory system to detect any known Covid variants in a room in five minutes. The inexpensive, proof-of-concept device combines advances in aerosol sampling technology and a biosensing technique initially developed to detect amyloid beta. The scientists suggest the device could be modified to detect other respiratory virus aerosols, including influenza and respiratory syncytial virus. The team is working to develop a commercial version of the Covid detector.

A new US Geological Survey study has found that nearly half of US tap water—45%—is contaminated with “forever chemicals.” However, the number of people drinking contaminated water could be much higher. The Great Plains, Great Lakes, Eastern Seaboard, and Central/Southern California have the highest concentrations of forever
chemicals. Exposure to per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances, or PFAS, has been linked to health problems, including cancer, obesity, high cholesterol, and others.
