Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Here’s a weird medical practice from history I bet you didn’t know of. Today we use Botox and Juvederm to smooth out our fine lines and wrinkles. However, if you wanted this kind of cosmetic procedure in the 19th century, your doctor would most likely inject you with paraffin wax.

Mernurse Ahoy!

AndrΓ© Chambers, a nurse at the Betty Ford Center near Palm Springs, California, is not a fish. But the blue-haired, muscled leather competitor and civil rights advocate is Aquaman, both on his Instagram account and in the new documentary, Merman, screened last month at the Tribeca Film Festival. As a queer Black man tattooed with ocean waves and King Triton, Chambers talks about being comfortable in his skin and becoming Aquaman in this fascinating profile.

ICAN Is Back

Bipartisan lawmakers re-introduced the Improving Care and Access to Nurses (ICAN) Act to the U.S. Senate last week in hopes of moving forward with the bill that stalled last year. The bill, which four bipartisan legislators already re-introduced in the House of Representatives in April, would remove barriers to practice for NPs and expand their scope. Undeterred by American Medical Association opposition, nearly 400 AANP members went to Washington, DC, in mid-June to advocate for the bill.Β

A Tragic Death

When an elderly patient left a Majestic Care facility and lay down in the middle of the road in Livonia, Michigan, on Sunday night, several nurses followed and put her in a wheelchair. As they returned, a car swerved to avoid the wheelchair and hit Pebbles Lockhart, a 42-year-old nurse who died at the hospital. The CEO called Lockhart β€œan amazing caregiver that provided exceptional care to residents and created magic for all those around her.”

YOUR NEW THING STRATEGY WITH NEW THING NURSE

Embrace Your Value

During a recent conversation with a client, I heard them anxiously say: β€œI don’t know what l’ll do if I don’t get this job.”

I immediately paused our discussion and emphasized an essential point:Β

β€œYour worth as a person is not determined by a job offer. You are an incredible nurse, a qualified candidate, and your professional and personal value goes beyond the outcome of this interview.”

I have repeatedly seen this mindset throughout my years of working with nursing students, nurses, and nurse practitioners. Regardless of their achievements or qualifications, many professionals base their self-worth on their job, specifically on whether or not they secure job offers.

I am here to tell you that your significance reaches far beyond employment. The outcome of an interview does not define your worth as a human being.

If you need to hear this louder, don’t hesitate to connect to New Thing Nurse.
