Rally for Benefits

Thousands of 1199SEIU union members joined hundreds of nurses from New Jersey’s Clara Maass Hospital in a rally Saturday calling for fair contracts. Nurses already picketed the hospital last spring after management suspended nine nurses for delivering a petition protesting a nurse’s unfair treatment. Among the nurses’ demands are a labor-management committee to address workplace issues and quality-of-life benefits, including access to 1199’s childcare fund and training and education fund.

Viral TikTok Plea

Travel ICU nurse and TikToker @nurse.chen had just finished a shift in the neural trauma unit when she posted what she considers the most important thing she’s ever said on TikTok: “Do not get on these motorized scooters! You guys, they’re freaking dangerous!” Chenedy, 26, described a patient younger than her who was now paralyzed and another with traumatic brain injury due to falling off the scooters. The viral TikTok has pulled in over 5.1 million views and over 18,000 comments.

Solution to “Doctor” Use

We reported last week on the DNPs in California who are suing to be able to use the honorific “doctor” title. Discussion over the use of “doctor” isn’t new; in fact, it goes back centuries, according to a commentary at STAT that offers a solution to end all the debate: no one should use the honorific around patients, and anyone who has earned any doctorate can use it with colleagues and peers. Just Think About Walking

An innovative new brain-computer interface using AI algorithms has shown promise in restoring mobility for paralyzed patients. The technology directly decodes a patient’s walking intentions from brain signals and wirelessly communicates this to a spinal cord stimulator that activates leg nerves and muscles.

Unlike previous brain stimulation methods, as pioneering as they have been, which were rigid and “puppeteer-like,”; this breakthrough system can interpret complex neural activity patterns associated with intended movements. It’s AI-assisted telepathy making mind over matter a tangible concept.

While still in its early stage, this research highlights the potential of AI to create more seamless brain-computer interfaces. Further advances in these neurally-controlled technologies could one day help many patients with SCIs regain the ability to walk fluidly, safely, and independently through the power of their minds. A video of this telepathy can be found here and here

AI Nurses?

With the recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI), characteristics such as creativity, critical thinking, and communication can be replicated by AI. Nursing researchers are exploring whether robots and AI can be ethically trusted with nursing, a human practice.
