MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

Racism Is a Huge Problem in Nursing

In a new survey of 960 nurses, 80% of respondents saw or experienced racism from patients and 60% from colleagues. But fewer than a quarter of them reported the incidents. Moreover, 81% of RNs are white, but the racist incidents were most common for Black nurses (88% reported racism from patients and 72% from colleagues) and Asian nurses (86% from patients and 65% from colleagues). The survey reveals a culture of racism stretching back to Florence Nightingale, who promoted ideals that only upper-class white Christian women would make good nurses.

How the Debt Ceiling Deal Affects Health Care

The White House and congressional Republicans reached a deal to raise the debt ceiling—and it affects health care. It takes back about $30 billion in unspent pandemic relief funds from dozens of CMS programs but does not touch healthcare-related federal entitlement programs, for the most part. The deal also doesn’t affect Medicaid and the Inflation Reduction Act and excludes Medicaid work requirements. However, it would enact work rules for federal food stamps and family welfare benefits program recipients.

Ways That Hospitals Are Trying to Improve Patient Experience

Hospitals nationwide are launching various initiatives to improve patient experience — and their scores on the CMS’ Care Compare website. For example, Northwell Health in New York is adding professional chefs to its hospitals’ kitchens. Other hospitals are launching initiatives to monitor cleanliness; teach staff how to engage with respect, courtesy, and empathy; get patients more involved in their care; and discharge patients via a video call with a nurse

💸 FINANCE FRIDAY powered by

Time > Money

Long shifts, extra shifts, side hustles, career growth - as nurses, we juggle many priorities and things that compete for our time, money, and attention. When was the last time you assessed how much you truly value what you spend your money and your time on? What brings you more happiness, money, or time?

Consider this: “Money is an opportunity for happiness, but it is an opportunity that people routinely squander because the things they think will make them happy often don’t.”

So how do we not squander our opportunity at happiness?

Research shows that people who value time over money have better social connections, healthier family relationships, and greater job satisfaction. Money facilitates happiness best when we use it to buy experiences, benefit others, or indulge in small pleasures!
