Investing in Nurse Entrepreneurs |
Founded by Marla Weston and Beth Brooks, venture capital firm Nurse Capital closed its inaugural $1M Fund to support nurse-led startups. It’s investing in RN-led companies creating innovative healthcare products and services. Weston and Brooks, who hold doctorates in nursing science, aim to fill a funding gap for nurse entrepreneurs, focusing on healthcare devices,
technology platforms, software, patient education, and wellness products while emphasizing the unique insights nurses bring to healthcare innovation. The fund also seeks to increase venture capital investments in women-led and underrepresented founder-led businesses.

New Research Prioritizes Older Women |
Last year, the Biden administration announced an initiative to address an alarming gap: the dearth of critical health information on women, particularly older women, who outlive men and face unique health challenges. Experts emphasize the need for gender-specific data in clinical trials, highlighting the varying effectiveness of drugs like the Alzheimer's medication Leqembi. They
note that research priorities include better heart disease treatment, understanding cognitive decline, addressing mental health issues, improving cancer screening and treatment, and focusing on bone health and frailty.

Silencing Patients with NDAs |
Some major public hospitals are protecting doctors by settling malpractice cases with NDAs, effectively silencing patients, NBC reported. One such case involves a patient diagnosed with end-stage cardiomyopathy. Severe complications resulted from a risky heart transplant surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center by Dr. Nahush Mokadam, leading to a lawsuit
against Mokadam, which was settled in 2023 for $12 million with an NDA. Legal experts say this practice, which keeps malpractice claims confidential and limits transparency in medical errors, needs to stop. Do you agree?

FINANCE FRIDAY WITH NETWORTH NURSE |
Should Nurses Rent or Buy a Home in 2024-2025? |
We hear this debate often, and much like other areas of personal finance—it's personal! And it depends on several different factors. The case for renting:
There is a lot of pressure from the media, family, and friends that promote the narrative “renting is throwing money away.” As you can read, this is not the case in today’s environment. However, if you plan to live somewhere for 5+ years, value your own space, and find an affordable home, buying can make sense to build long-term wealth.
If you are considering buying a home, connect with the team at Homes for Heroes to assess potential savings on mortgages and refinances!
