Thatβs A Lot of Complaints |
Since July, nurses at Massachusettsβ Saint Vincent Hospital have filed more than 600 complaints against hospital administration and accused them of violating a post-strike contract. Despite an agreement for improved staffing, the Massachusetts Nurses Association claims levels have dropped, and patient loads increased under a new chief nursing officer. Nurses report situations where four handle over 100 patients, and the union alleges deliberate understaffing by Tenet Healthcare has led to unsafe conditions. They have filed charges of unfair labor practices for alleged retaliatory actions, including terminations and suspensions.

Flip Flopped Decision |
On New Yearβs Day, Columbus, Ohio, banned menthol cigarettes, but the state legislature has now reversed the decision, preventing local authorities from regulating tobacco sales. Similar restrictions exist in at least 39 other states. The move frustrates public health officials in Ohio, where smoking rates are higher than the national rate (17.1% vs
11.5%). The federal ban on menthol is delayed, and the Ohio statewide provision hinders local efforts to address tobacco-related health risks that significantly impact Black communities.Β

LGBTQIA+ Fertility Services |
New Jersey has enacted a law expanding health insurance coverage for infertility services to LGBTQIA+ individuals. Such services can cost upwards of $160,000 to fertilize a donated egg and use a gestational carrier. Till now, fertile LGBTQIA+ couples were excluded from financial help, which some see as discrimination. Governor Phil Murphy signed the bill in January and emphasized its potential to create new opportunities for families in New Jersey.

Finding ways to balance income and debt can be a bit of a hurdle for healthcare professionals to overcome. Luckily, with the Networth Nurse, you can get all the tools and resources you need to feel empowered in your finances.Β Β
Here are some tips for balancing your income and debt as a healthcare professional:Β
Live within your means. Itβs easy to increase your spending when your income is high, but ensure you are accounting for your bills and debts before spending on non-necessities.Β Β
Account for debts and investments. Investments are a great way to create additional income streams, but they often cost money. Make sure you balance debt and investment payments to avoid overextending your pay.Β
Start planning for retirement early. Time goes fast; without a plan, you can end up without resources when retirement age comes around.Β Β
Develop a long-term plan for your finances. This will help you focus on the prize instead of spending frivolously.Β Β
