One Is Not Enough
|
There is only oneΒ burn unit in HawaiΚ»i: a Straub facility in Honolulu, OΚ»ahu. After the devastating fires on Maui, nine patients with second- to third-degree burns were flown to the unit. The unit is used to having patients flown in from other islands, including US territories like Guam, but this was
the largest influx it has ever experienced and is challenging for the unit's doctors and nurses. Before its establishment in the 1980s, burn victims had to be flown more than 2,000 miles away to California.

Relieving Burnout Virtually
|
Saint Lukeβs Healthcare SystemΒ in Kansas City has found an effective way to help relieve burnout among its nurses: a virtual nursing program. The program reduces administrative burdens on bedside nurses, including admissions and discharge tasks, by giving these duties to virtual nurses. Moreover,
nurses who need a break can temporarilyΒ βtime outβΒ by taking on virtual duties instead of continuing direct care. This allows nurses to stay in the profession they love by working in a less stressful and physical environment.
