In February 2020, most of the country was glued to the news about the βnovel coronavirusβ that led to the COVID-19 pandemic. But 19-year-old Ashlyn Nystuen was focused on something totally different: the bone marrow transplant she would undergo at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester to treat severe aplastic anemia. The Return of Mpox |
Mpox is back with a vengeanceβand the U.S. isnβt ready. We told you in June about a CDC report showing fewer U.S. cases. But two years after the global outbreakβwhen U.S. cases accounted for a third of all casesβthe World Health Organization declared last Thursday that the outbreak spreading through multiple African countries is a βpublic health emergency.β Sweden announced the first case outside Africa and the CDC is reminding people of mpox vaccination recommendations.

Skip the Cipro |
Ciprofloxacin is among the antibiotics recommended by the CDC for treatment of meningococcal disease in certain situations and itβs one of the three antibiotics recommended for prophylactic treatment of close contacts of someone with the disease. But New York
Stateβs Department of Health is now advising against cipro for post-exposure prophylaxis because of a rise in antimicrobial resistance. Providers should opt for rifampin and ceftriaxone instead.
