Medicare Telemedicine Coverage Extended

One of the few silver linings to come out of the pandemic was the massive, rapid expansion of telemedicine services. Use of telemedicine has fallen since the middle of the pandemic, though about 13% of Medicare beneficiaries still use it. But some of the flexibility Congress created for Medicare telemedicine use was set to expire at the end of 2024. In a last-minute deal, Congress extended that flexibility through March 31, though its future is uncertain after that.

Hospital Emergency Code Confusion

A nurse-led study at Cleveland Clinic Medina (Ohio) Hospital has revealed that plain language announcements may improve hospital staff response time to non-clinical emergencies compared to coded messages. Two assistant nurse managers were inspired to conduct the study after their own delayed response to a Code Sliver (active shooter situation). The findings correlated with a separate 2023 study which discovered that many hospital workers struggle to recognize emergency codes when coded language is used.

Infant RSV Vaccination Needs

RSV season is well underway, with β€œvery high” levels reported in about a half dozen states and β€œhigh” levels in a dozen others, based on the CDC’s wastewater testing data. Last year was the first season when RSV vaccination for infants was available, but it didn’t seem to reduce pediatric hospitalizations or infections, according to a recent study. Rates and hospitalizations were similar to pre-pandemic levels, suggesting a need for more widespread vaccination with the maternal vaccine or nirsevimab.

CARING COLLECTIVELY WITH TOGATHER

Practical New Year Resolutions for Better Healthcare

88% of New Year resolutions are abandoned within two weeksβ€”so if you’re already feeling β€œoff track,” take a breath. You’re not alone. With everything happening in the world and healthcare, let’s choose gentleness over rigidity. Instead of big resolutions, let’s lean into small, purposeful, doable steps.

Here are a few health equity-focused intentions to enact change:

  • Learn: Dedicate 15 minutes a week to understanding healthcare inequities. Start with this free resource.

  • Advocate: Advocacy isn’t just about policies. Share what you’re learning about health inequities in conversations with colleagues, friends, or family. Change starts with connection.

  • Care for yourself: What’s one thing you’ve done for yourself today? This week? Guilt around rest is real, but rest is revolutionary. Try this tool as a daily reminder that rest fuels change.

Small, consistent actions add up. What intention will you start with today? Tell me here.
