The Nurse-Turned-Entrepreneur

Fed up with not seeing quality hair care products with natural ingredients, registered nurse Courtney Adeleye decided to make her own in 2013. She documented her new hair care routine on YouTube, gaining a large following. With just $500 in the bank, she developed and sold a few deep conditioning treatments to her fans, and The Mane Choice was born. Five years later, her products — all free from mineral oil, petrolatum, parabens, sulfates, and formaldehyde — earned her $100 million. Learn Adeleye’s full story at Entrepreneur.

The First Native Hawaiian Psychiatrist

In 1972, Benjamin Young, the first Native Hawaiian psychiatrist, was tasked with a daunting job: increasing the number of Pacific Islanders and other underrepresented medical groups. With donations from several companies in Hawaiʻi and beyond, ʻImi Hoʻola (“those who seek to heal”) at the University of Hawaiʻi was born. The program has since trained hundreds of Hawai’i students, and hundreds more elsewhere, in medicine, producing the first Hawaiian oncologist, ER physicians, and the current director for the Hawaiʻi Department of Health, among many others. Learn Youngʻs full story at StatNews.

The 16-Year-Old Nurse

The daughter of a medical doctor, Elliana Tenenbaum, always wanted to heal people. She performed her first shot at just four years old; at eight years old, her first thyroid ultrasound. She took college courses in high school and, at age 15, entered Arizona State University’s accelerated nursing program. Just a year later, she became the youngest nursing student to ever graduate from the program. She has already begun applying for nursing jobs and will take her NCLEX exam soon.
