Good Morning, Readers! |
One of todayβs Top Beats discusses the rising rates of chronic illness in the US. In addition to lack of healthcare access, I found non-compliance to be a major contributing factor to poor patient outcomes when I was a bedside nurse. Iβm curious: what are your tips and tricks to address non-compliance in your patients? Tell me about them here.

Kudos for Chicas |
Congratulations are in order for Roxana C. Chicas, PhD, RN, FAAN, who was just selected as the 2024β2026 American Academy of Nursing Fellow at the National Academy of Medicine. Chicas is the second Fellow to enter the program, established in 2022 to give nurses a chance to participate in public health studies specifically aimed at improving care in national and global health care systems. Chicasβs current research centers on occupational and environmental health disparities, especially in agriculture.

A Chronic Problem |
The good news: COVID-19 deaths have fallen 69%, dropping from the fourth-leading cause of U.S. death to the tenth, according to the CDCβs most recent mortality data. But now for the bad news: deaths from chronic disease have continued increasing. More people died from stroke,
chronic lower respiratory diseases, Alzheimerβs, diabetes, kidney disease, and liver diseases last year than in the previous year, largely due to poor primary care access and disease management, STAT reports.

FTC Nixes STI Pics |
The idea was a novel way to offer patients quick answers about that apparent rash on their genitals: use AI-powered apps to diagnose sexually transmitted infections based on a photo of a penis. But privacy experts, doctors, and patient advocates immediately raised concerns about the HeHealth and Calmara apps. Now the Federal Trade Commission has agreed, citing inadequate data supporting the apps, and both have been shut down.

Exploring OpenEvidence |
Writing for The Nursing Beat, I get the opportunity to explore and experiment with new digital healthcare tools and products. My latest discoveryβand quickly becoming a go-to reference toolβis OpenEvidence. This AI-powered medical search platform is similar to UpToDate, but youβre able to get answers regarding medical and nursing questions.Β
For example, you may pose a clinical question, like I did here. OpenEvidence then aggregates and synthesizes the most relevant research, delivering a clinically sound answer complete with references. I even asked non-medical questions to test for hallucinations and it recognized non-medical topics and did not provide an answer. Itβs a game-changer for anyone who values precision and depth in their clinical practice.
