MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

UCSF Hospital Workers Strike, Nurses Hold Sympathy Strike

On Wednesday, members of the National Union of Healthcare Workers at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland went on strike. The 1,200 union members at the hospital include licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, and medical technicians; respiratory, physical, speech, and occupational therapists; housekeepers and food service workers; office workers; and psychologists and social workers. In addition, members of the California Nurses Association and the Caregivers and Healthcare Employees Union—representing registered nurses and other healthcare workers—stood in solidarity with the workers’ union by holding a one-day sympathy strike.

NUHW members have been working without a contract for many months, seeking better wages, communication between hospital administration and workers, and job security. The hospital’s “best and final offer” included a 13% pay increase for most union employees and combined wage and market increases equal 16%.

Pennsylvania-Based Health System Geisinger Expands Career Pathways Program

In 2021, the Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania launched its Nursing Scholar Program, which has supported nearly 230 employees in becoming registered nurses. The career development program provides financial, educational, and wellness support to employees who have worked with Geisinger for a year or more and aren’t already an RN or provider. In addition, Geisinger is now expanding its program to help employees who have been at Geisinger for at least six months to pursue a career as a licensed practical nurse, surgical technologist, or certified medical assistant.

Depending on the career pathway chosen, program participants will receive $7,000 to $40,000 in financial support. In addition, they must agree to work with Geisinger for two to five years after graduating from the program. Geisinger also offers guidance in choosing schools and degree programs, as well as mentorship support.

Biden Executive Order to Make Child Care Cheaper, More Accessible

President Biden has signed an executive order with 50 directives to federal agencies that work to boost pay for care workers, support family caregivers, and increase affordable care options. The budget includes $9 billion for the Child Care and Development Block Grant, $13.1 billion for Head Start, and $500 million for grants to create or expand free, high-quality pre-schooling for children in high-poverty areas, among other things.

Under the order, the Office of Personnel Management and the Defense Department will work to make child care more affordable for people working on federal projects or military installations. In addition, the Department of Health and Human Services will streamline the process for American Indian and Alaska Native communities to access child care while increasing the pay and benefits for Head Start teachers and staff. Some other directives improve care for veterans, seniors, and people with disabilities.

How Much Do You Need?

Financial Literacy Month continues! One of the most significant pieces of education I received that helped me on my financial journey was setting my number. Do you know your number- that is, the number you need to have saved and invested to retire comfortably? Some call it their FI (financially independent) number.

One survey shows that Americans say they will need around 1.1 million dollars to retire comfortably. But is that enough? With inflation, potential recessions, and our goals to live a great life, we will likely need more!

Take your yearly expenses and multiply by 25. This is your number!

This quick calculation will provide you with a goal and starting point to shoot for. You will find this number to be higher or lower depending on many factors such as the lifestyle you want to live, family to support, hobbies and leisure, etc.

Use the InvestHealth FI calculator and our Pathway download to set your number!
