Delirium After Stroke Hurts Outcomes

A study published this month in American Journal of Critical Care found 44% of patients critically ill after a stroke experienced delirium. Conducted in the 16-bed neurosciences critical care unit (NCCU) at The Ohio State University (OSU) Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio, this research also found delirium was most common in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. Even one day of delirium was associated with worse outcomes, including more days on a ventilator, longer hospital stays, and being unable to return home at discharge.

12,000 Pounds of Blueberries Recalled

Last week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall alert at the highest risk level after inspectors found blueberries produced by Alma Pak International in Atlanta, Georgia were contaminated with Listeria. Infection with Listeria is rare, but it can be serious, especially for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and anyone with a weakened immune system. The recalled organic blueberries were only shipped to one customer before the contamination was caught.

“Inflammaging” Tied to Industrialized Environment

With aging comes more systemic inflammation as a result of persistent immune system activation. But a new study published in Nature Aging in June calls into question whether this process is universal or a product of our environment. The study compared inflammatory markers in people from Italy, Singapore, Bolivia, and Malaysia, and found those in more rural environments had different inflammatory markers compared to those living in industrialized regions, whose blood samples revealed proteins that signal inflammaging.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Hey everyone! We’re finally into July which means our time at the beach, camping trips, backyard barbecues, and graduation parties is officially ramping up! This also means that we’ll be spending a lot more time in the sun.

The month of July is officially UV (ultraviolet) Safety and Awareness Month, and it’s a great time for us to refresh our memories on some of the skin cancer diagnoses that come along with excessive UV exposure. So slap on some SPF, grab your sunnies, and let’s get into it!

☀️ This type of skin cancer is the most common type and occurs when the skin is exposed to either natural (the sun) or artificial (tanning bed) UV radiation.

☀️ The lesions of this type of skin cancer can have different appearances such as a pinkish colored growth, or a sore with elevated edges with an indented central region that may seep or bleed.

☀️ This type of skin cancer rarely will migrate from where the tumor is located, however, there are instances where the cancer can become an aggressive form and invade other areas of the body.
