In 1882, 143 years ago today, Dr. Robert Koch told the world about his discovery of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which causes TB infection. These days, if you have a patient with TB, they go straight into a negative pressure room, and you’re outfitted with the latest N95 mask.
But until recently, no such technology existed. When the plague tore through Europe in the 1600s, medical providers wore crazy wax-coated suits and leather beak-shaped masks filled with “purifying” herbs (pic below).
Soon after TB was discovered, nurses led the way in wearing facemasks made of cloth or gauze, even though many head physicians refused. So, next time you grimace at your N95, remember—you could be wearing a leather beak!

Screen Breaks Necessary for Eye Health |
We’ve long known that our digital screens aren’t great for our eyes, negatively impacting eye strain, sleep, and possibly your risk of age-related macular degeneration. Worse, just a one-hour daily increase in screen time could raise your risk of myopia by 21%, a new study found. If reducing screen time is challenging due to work or other factors, you can at least use the 20-20-20 rule (looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) to reduce eye strain.

company. To protect yourself and your finances: document any home issues, immediately notify the builder or landlord in writing, and understand your state homeowner or tenant rights.

University of Florida Nursing Boon |
The University of Florida College of Nursing will receive $3 million to address Florida’s nursing shortage, funded by Florida’s LINE (Linking Industry to Nursing
Education) program and UF Health (LINE requires state funds to be matched by a healthcare provider). The money will support scholarships, lab upgrades, faculty recruitment, and student services. Scholarships for Accelerated BSN students cover tuition and books, requiring a 36-month work commitment at UF Health.
