The Best of Us

In 1980, nurse JoAnne Foley witnessed her supervisor, Nancy Allspach, show extraordinary compassion towards a baby with a severe congenital, life-threatening disorder. Rather than leave the baby in a bassinet with minimal supervision, as was common then, the β€œunsung hero” cradled the infant, talked to her, and treated her with love, even feeding and rocking her. She also showed deep empathy towards the mother. This care inspired Foley, who strives to provide comfort and human connection to patients and families, especially during moments of loss and grief.

Help Out the Midwives

A recent study found that low-income California communities face increased challenges with maternity care due to hospital ward closures. Community midwives, who could help bridge this gap and typically work solo or in small groups, need help to become Medi-Cal providers due to complex registration and reimbursement processes. This exacerbates disparities in perinatal care access. The researchers suggest urgent action is required to streamline these processes and increase reimbursement rates, ensuring equitable care for all.

Mountainous Medical Debt

Medical debt remains a significant burden in the US, affecting over 20 million adults β€” and amounting to at least $220 billion β€” despite widespread health insurance coverage. Research shows high deductibles and out-of-pocket costs contribute to this issue, disproportionately impacting those with limited resources and significant medical needs, including individuals with disabilities, those in poorer health, and lower-income populations. Demographic disparities persist, highlighting ongoing challenges in healthcare affordability and access.
