🧠 The main symptomatology of this disease is muscular dystrophy and abnormalities within the brain and eyes.
🧠 Infants with this disease have hypotonia, muscle weakness, and atrophy which generally worsens over time.
🧠 The brains of infants with this disease have serious findings on scans including type II lissencephaly (aka smooth brain), hydrocephalus, and malformations in the back of the brain.

In 1980, nurse JoAnne Foley witnessed her supervisor, Nancy Allspach, show extraordinary compassion towards a baby with a severe congenital, life-threatening disorder. Rather than leave the baby in a bassinet with minimal supervision, as was common then, the “unsung hero” cradled the infant, talked to her, and treated her with love, even feeding and rocking her. She also showed deep empathy towards the mother. This care inspired Foley, who strives to provide comfort and human connection to patients and families, especially during moments of loss and grief.

hospital ward closures. Community midwives, who could help bridge this gap and typically work solo or in small groups, need help to become Medi-Cal providers due to complex registration and reimbursement processes. The researchers suggest urgent action is required to streamline these processes and increase reimbursement rates, ensuring equitable care for all.
