Nurses Help Thwart Kidnapping
|
Two unnamed nurses in North Bergen, NJ, are being hailed as heroes for helping to stop the abduction of a 17-year-old girl. Roberto Canavalan, who has been arrested and charged for the attempt, had put the girl in a chokehold and tried to drag her away. North Bergen Police Chief Robert Farley said several men ignored the struggle and didn’t even call 911—but two nurses from a nearby clinic, along with two other good samaritans, intervened and freed the girl. |

Why So Many People Now Say They Have ADHD |
In recent years, the US has seen a surge in ADHD diagnoses, which some research suggests is partly fueled by the viral spread of ADHD content on social media. In a recent episode of NPR’s It’s Been a Minute, host Brittany Luse explored the issue with journalist Kelli Maria Korducki and anthropologist Manvir Singh. They dove into the blurred lines between genuine neurodevelopmental disorder and everyday human experiences framed as symptoms online, the benefits and pitfalls of diagnosis, the influence of telehealth and social platforms, and more. Listen here. |

How to Handle Your Potatoes Correctly |
There are countless ways to enjoy potatoes—that is, if you store them properly. Placing raw potatoes in the fridge transforms starches into sugars, changing the flavor and texture and potentially spiking harmful acrylamide. Instead, store them in a cool, dark, well-ventilated space, away from ethylene-producing foods like onions and bananas. Cut off small spots or sprouts that develop. During food prep, put peeling and cut potatoes in water to prevent browning (bonus: soaking potatoes before frying removes excess starch, making their insides fluffier and outsides crispier). |

Mystery Diagnosis Minute |
Hey everyone! It’s finally May! Even with great weather and the promise of summer right around the corner, it can be tough for some to find the drive to get up and out of bed for a plethora of reasons. May is national Mental Health Awareness Month and we already know that nurses are not exempt from mental health challenges.
Burnout, depression, and anxiety are usually at the forefront of everyone’s minds for the mental health issues nurses suffer, so this month, I’m taking a look at diagnoses that nurses are experiencing that aren’t as well known.
🩺 This condition arises from consistent exposure to traumatizing events that can alter how a nurse views the world and provides patient care.
🩺 Some signs of this condition include detachment, a reduction in empathy towards patients, poor self-esteem, and feelings of having no personal accomplishments.
🩺 Physical manifestations of this condition can include an increase in fatigue, insomnia, body-wide pain, and a reduction in immunity.
