Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

☀️ Happy FriYAY TNB fam!

This was our first year honoring Mental Health Week in conjunction with our friends at Lavender Health. As a bedside nurse, I buried my traumatic experiences in the next patient, the next shift, and the next ambulance, without ever stopping to think about how it affected me and my personal life. Years later, this is the first time that I have been able to stop, reflect, and connect with nurses that are paving a new way for us to look at our mental health. As a nurse founded and run organization, Lavender Health has helped me realize that you cannot only recognize but solve the inadequacies we face in mental health support.

Happy Mental Health Week to all the brave nurses and allied professionals.

MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

The Benefits of Cultivating Awe

Awe is that powerful feeling of wonder at lifeʻs mysteries and complexities, whether it’s the beauty of nature, the harmony of music, or the cycle of life and death. And if you’re dealing with loneliness, cynicism, or “excessive self-focus,” injecting a little awe into your life could shift how you feel. Some research found that awe helps build a sense of interdependence and interconnectedness with other people and the world at large. It can also counter cynicism by bringing more awareness to the “moral beauty” of others — people’s kindness, courage, selflessness, and capacity to overcome adversity.

A simple awe-inducing practice involves focusing on the world around you: the clouds, the movement of wind through trees, and people rushing to their destinations. Carefully listening to the individual sounds of musical numbers can also bring about awe. And thinking positively about mentors, courageous historical figures, kindness among strangers, etc., yields numerous benefits.

Large Study Shows Lilly Drug Slows Alzheimer’s

In a large clinical trial involving people with early Alzheimer’s disease, an experimental drug from Eli Lilly has significantly slowed participants’ mental and physical decline. According to the company, the drug, donanemab, slowed participants’ decline by 35 percent compared with the placebo over 18 months! This result uses a measure Lilly designed to assess cognition and the ability to perform daily tasks and self-care. Still, they mirror a 36 percent slower decline seen using a different metric more widely used in Alzheimer’s disease trials.

With the drug’s impressive results, Lilly plans to submit an application to the Food and Drug Administration for approval of donanemab before the end of June. One possible hurdle, however, is a potentially serious side effect — about one-fourth of patients experienced brain swelling associated with a type of imaging abnormality called amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA).

School Nurses Are Invaluable, and the UK Needs at Least 11,000 More of Them

The UK is experiencing a school nurse crisis. Research shows that the number of school nurses dipped by 35% in the last five years. According to the Guardian, nearly three-quarters of school nurses report a workload increase, and four-fifths worry they’re missing vulnerable children. To help ease school nurses’ workloads and support students, researchers and campaigners are calling for 11,000 more school nurses to add to the 2,000 currently working in the UK.

Since the pandemic began, school nurses have dealt with increasingly complex mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation and self-harm, eating disorders, and school avoidance. Experts say that governments and local authorities should work to dismantle stereotypes of school nurses as people who treat minor injuries — and place them in leadership roles within schools. And, of course, more funding for school nurses is vital.
