Good Morning, Readers,

This week at TNB is bittersweet as we welcome Raquél and say goodbye to Hannah as COO.

Hannah and I have worked as new grads, in different hospitals, lived together during the pandemic, and even started a lapel pin business before TNB! Our journey has gone far beyond a working relationship.

On Hannah’s last week, our friend and colleague Paul Coyne—a nurse executive and lyrical genius—shared a poem that says it best.

Best Friends

Look back on a lifetime

For friends who didn’t grow apart

It’s not those who saw always eye to eye

But those who could see heart to heart

What is best for me is best for me

And there should be nothing less

What is best for you is best for you

And I only want the best

It doesn’t need be the same

That’s never how it ends

The only thing that’s truly best for both

Is for us to stay best friends

Until we meet again (company #3!), Hans! 😭

Tax Credit Proposed for Nurse Preceptors

Six bipartisan U.S. Congress members have introduced a bill that would provide a $2,000 tax credit for nurses who take on clinical preceptor roles for nursing students. The PRECEPT Nurses Act aims to address the national nursing shortage and has received the approval of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology. One of the introducing representatives, Rep. Jen Kiggans (R-VA), is herself a geriatric NP.

How Climate Change Affects Nursing

As global temperatures continue to rise with climate change, the resulting effects on severe storms and extreme weather are impacting nursing, as well. AACN Advanced Critical Care recently published a series of five articles on how climate change has affected acute and critical care. The articles include discussions of hospital response, environmental sustainability in acute and critical care, emerging infectious disease, and opportunities for individual environmental stewardship.

Two Months for New Habits

How are your New Year’s resolutions coming along? If you’re struggling to keep any resolutions heading into February, you’re not alone. But stick with it to March and you just might establish the habit you want long-term. Despite a long-standing misconception that it takes “21 days” to solidify a new habit, a new study suggests habit formation takes at least two months—and possibly up to a year. So don’t give up!

CARING COLLECTIVELY WITH TOGATHER

Defending Care Through Community

The Trump administration has moved quickly to roll back public health protections:

  • Withdrawing from WHO and climate agreements weakens global collaboration on disease prevention.

  • Eliminating DEI and LGBTQ+ protections erases efforts to close health equity gaps.

  • Threats to Medicaid and the ACA put millions at risk of losing access to care.

  • Scientific censorship limits research, funding, and public access to life-saving information.

Nurses have always been at the forefront of care—not just in hospitals, but in our communities.

Now, more than ever, we must stand together. We can support patients by sharing trusted, science-based resources on health coverage, reproductive rights, and disease prevention and advocating for evidence-based policies that protect access to care.

This work must be sustainable, so take action with joy by joining Togather—a national movement mobilizing healthcare workers for health justice through collective care and collective action.

Our strength has always been in caring collectively—for our patients, for each other, and for the future of public health.
