Happy FriYAY Readers!

This week, our team had the pleasure of working with the San Francisco Giants to highlight Nurses Night. We got to:

⚾️ Host a rooftop networking event for nurses.

⚾️ Nominate a nurse and former X Factor contestant, Ellona Santiago, to sing the national anthem.

⚾️ Nominate a fellow Bay Area nurse, Joey Ferry, founder of SafeSeizure, to come onto the field during the pregame show to acknowledge him for all his achievements within the nursing community!

There were thousands of nurses in attendance celebrating this special night and we couldn’t be more thrilled to be there!

Sudden Hiring Freeze Devastates PA

Physician assistant Mojgan Pedram thought she was building a better life for her family when she relocated from California to Houston for a job at Texas Children’s Hospital. But just hours after she was given a start date, the struggling hospital withdrew the offer and position due to a hiring freeze, leaving Pedram out $30K from the move. She’s now suing for at least $400,000, alleging the hospital knew about the freeze, but didn’t tell her.

Cannabis Use Disorder Tied to Head and Neck Cancers

You may be seeing articles with titles claiming “cannabis use” is tied to head and neck cancers, but the whole story is more nuanced. A new study found that adults with cannabis use disorder—heavy, problematic cannabis use that causes distress and signs of tolerance and dependence—are 3.5 to 5 times more likely to develop the cancers. The study didn’t look at how the participants used cannabis (i.e. smoking or edibles), but the researchers suspect that cannabis smoke is driving the cancer rates.

IVF Clinics Struggle With Frozen Embryos

Following Alabama’s Supreme Court ruling classifying embryos as “unborn children,” fertility patients and clinics in Alabama and other conservative states are making tough decisions about their frozen embryos. Some patients are preemptively destroying embryos to avoid future legal complications while others are sending them to other states. Click here to learn more about how patients and clinics are navigating these uncertain times for IVF, which accounted for 2.3% of infants born in the US in 2021.

FINANCE FRIDAY WITH NETWORTH NURSE

Interest Rates are Falling!

Interest rates are starting to fall! That’s a good thing in many ways, but what should you do and how should you plan? They may not have fallen quite enough to make moves, but educate yourself now and you’ll be ready! This is the most comprehensive list I’ve seen, covering all the do’s and don’ts! Here’s a summary:

Do:

  • Do prioritize credit card debt and eliminate ASAP.

  • Do negotiate lower bills and credit card rates.

  • Do consider mortgage refinancing if rates continue to fall.

Don’t:

  • Don't set it and forget it. Monitor spending monthly.

  • Don’t try to game the system. Focus on your needs and do the math.

  • Don’t overpay for a car. Hunt for deals for months, if able.
