Violence in the Nursing Home

Resident-on-resident violence, particularly among dementia patients, is a significant and common issue in long-term care facilities. In one recent incident at Canyon Creek Memory Care in Montana, a resident died after being violently shoved by another with a history of aggressive behavior. Canyon Creek was found negligent and faced legal consequences, but systemic issues in the industry remain. These include inadequate staffing, difficulties managing multiple unpredictable dementia patients, and financial incentives that lead facilities to admit residents they cannot safely care for.

Sneaky Toxic Plants

Alicia Silverstone recently posted a TikTok video in which she ate a poisonous Jerusalem cherry, assuming it to be a tomato (she is alive and well). Many other plants resemble common foods but can be hazardous, such as the poisonous Carolina horsenettle (aka β€œdevil’s potato), which also resembles a tomato. Deadly nightshade berries mimic blueberries and can be fatal, while wild parsnips, which look like carrots with parsley leaves, are highly toxic. Contact poison control if you’ve made a clueless mistake like Silverstone.

Mystery Diagnosis Minute

Welcome back for another round of the Mystery Diagnosis Minute. As we wind down with our summer adventures, there’s still plenty of illnesses and bugs going around that could sideline us for more than a few days. Today’s diagnosis makes me itch just thinking about it.Β

🤔 If you come in contact with the urushiol resin contained in this woodland plant, you’ll have an allergic reaction.

🤔 The rash itself usually presents in a straight line as this is the way the plant brushes against your skin.

🤔 Unfortunately, the rash will develop approximately 12 to 48 hours after exposure and last an agonizing two to three weeks!Β
