One Medical Under Scrutiny |
The Amazon-owned primary care clinic One Medical allegedly instructed call center employees to reassure patients despite failures in escalating urgent calls, according to the Washington Post, which noted that 16 urgent cases were not promptly escalated. Amazon acknowledged two cases required immediate attention (for chest tightness and severe headache), though six case
records were missing. One Medicalβs CEO emphasized these incidents were a small fraction of their nearly 200,000 monthly interactions and highlighted improvements in call management and patient feedback since centralizing phone support.

Is the Apgar Score Outdated?Β |
The Apgar score, used to assess newborn health, includes skin color as one of five metrics. Research shows Black and other babies of color often score lower than white infants, though no significant differences in objective health measures are evident. Critics attribute this to the subjective and discriminatory nature of the skin color metric, which can lead to unnecessary medical
treatment for healthy babies of color. Experts advocate for removing skin color from the Apgar test, proposing an 8-point scale instead, but changing this globally used system would be challenging.
