HANDOFF

It’s A Girl ThingΒ

Female nurses and other healthcare workers are experiencing alarming rates of burnout that are consistently higher than their male counterparts. Research suggests that factors such as inequity, lack of autonomy, and poor work-life balance β€” in particular, the burden of familial responsibilities β€” contribute the most to this gender disparity. Compared with female nurses, male nurses appear to be better able to handle long, extended work weeks without getting burnt out, which experts attribute to differences in child care and child-rearing pressures outside of work.

Fix the Policies

The World Health Organization is urging governments to consider gender in their alcohol policies, which often overlook gender differences and allow the industry to target women with tailored marketing. Alcohol is a causal factor in over 200 disease and injury conditions, but both genders face distinct risks. Women experience greater harm at lower consumption levels β€” as well as more second-hand harm from partners’ alcohol use β€” and men at higher risk of excessive drinking.

The Age Old Healthcare Narrative

Older adults spend an average of 21 days yearly on medical appointments, a recent study found. But for many, the healthcare setting is rife with ageism, full of instances of medical professionals overlooking their autonomy or speaking patronizingly β€” and this discrimination costs the healthcare system billions. Efforts like the Age-Friendly Health Systems initiative and Changing the Narrative aim to counter this bias, and some 3,700 sites across the US are considered β€œage-friendly.”

MAP OF THE MODERN NURSEΒ WITH DEBRIEFING THE FRONT LINES

This Is Not a Nursing ShortageΒ

There is a popular narrative that the US healthcare system is experiencing a nursing shortage. There are 5.2 million registered nurses - of these, 89% are employed within the profession. This is a false narrative. There is not a nursing shortage.

Instead, there is a shortage of nurses willing to:Β

  • Endure abuse from a profit-driven systemΒ

  • Suffer physically and emotionally in a system intended to preserve human life.

  • Work in environments that do not value personal and patient safety

  • Hide the ethical dilemmas of providing dignified, quality patient care.

  • Accept money in exchange for silence.

  • Failure to protect those inside the system is hurting patients and nurses alike.Β

The β€œnursing shortage” solution requires institutional courage, a pledge to care for and protect those who depend on the institution, engage in moral action, and operate with integrity despite cost. The focus must shift from temporary solutions to efforts involving well-being and retention.
