Hey-O Nursing Beat Friends!

Today’s weird medical practice from history is a bit toxic. Did you know that arsenic was a popular ingredient in medicines since the 18th century all the way up to the 1950s? It was a key component of “Fowler's Solution”, thought to be a cure for malaria and syphilis.

Military Nurse Honored

Maj. Katie Lunning, the chief critical care nurse at the Minnesota Air National Guard’s 133rd Medical Group, received the Military Times’ 2023 Airman of the Year award for the “calm and skill under pressure that ensured 22 patients survived the suicide bombing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan” in 2021. In January, she became the first Air National Guard flight nurse to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, the military’s highest award for courage in aviation. Read her remarkable story here.

Carcinogenic Diet Coke?

We told you last week that the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer is listing the artificial sweetener aspartame as a “possible carcinogen.” Could it cause cancer? Do you need to stop using Equal in your coffee or drinking Coke Zero and other products with aspartame? Not necessarily, argues an article at STAT that explains the group’s four categories of possible carcinogens and lists some surprising other ones like coconut oil soaps.

Show Them the Money!

Registered nurses at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami are about to receive their biggest raise in three decades of the union’s history. Their 13% pay raise, part of a new three-year contract, has partly resulted from Florida’s severe nursing shortage, made worse by the pandemic. After accounting for other benefits, including additional pay for nurse training and certain departments, the raise could be as high as a 17% increase for some nurses, reports the Miami Herald.

#HowToGetHired: Don’t Throw Past Employers Under the Bus

Nurse leaders evaluate candidates during job interviews to assess their compatibility with the team. One way leaders consider candidates is by exploring how they discuss previous employers.

Why is this important? Potential bosses are interested in how you speak about your former bosses. Why? Because your future boss will eventually become your former boss as well. The way you talk about past employment can provide insight into how you might represent your next job.

To showcase your best self, consider highlighting the positive aspects of your current or previous job. What benefits have you gained in this role? Do you appreciate your coworkers? Have you acquired new skills? Have your experiences helped you identify your job preferences?

By maintaining a positive (or at least neutral) stance when discussing a job, you can assure future employers that you will represent their company favorably to others.
