Healthcare Benefits Lost

Striking workers at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Jersey will lose their healthcare benefits on September 1 and will instead have to pay for their benefits through COBRA. The United Steelworkers Local 4-200, representing some 1,700 nurses at the hospital, have been striking since the beginning of the month. Some nurses say they’ve prepared for this situation by taking overtime shifts before the strike; others are taking part-time or temporary nurse employment elsewhere.

Out With the Old

Did you know that one in every three patients who die in the hospital had sepsis during hospitalization? Moreover, only about half of hospitals with sepsis teams have time dedicated to managing sepsis symptoms. The CDC is launching a new hospital program — called Hospital Sepsis Program Core Elements — to curb this death rate through various initiatives. These include having leadership dedicated to devoting resources to the problem, implementing action plans to better manage sepsis, and training new hires and all employees on sepsis management protocols, among others.

What’s Chagas Anyway?

Doctors are sounding the alarm about Chagas disease, transmitted through the bite of a triatomine bug and can develop silently for decades before causing symptoms. The CDC says that only 1% of an estimated 300,000+ cases of Chagas in the US have been identified. However, 30% of people with Chagas develop serious heart disease. Unfortunately, the only US center dedicated to Chagas diagnosis and treatment has shuttered. Hope lies in a newly identified compound that can kill the Chagas parasite in monkeys (no clinical trials yet).
