The Massachusetts Nurses Association at Beth Israel Lahey Anna Jaques Hospital has approved a new three-year contract covering 350 registered nurses. The agreement includes significant wage increases of 10.5%–65%, a program for extra compensation on weekend shifts, staffing improvements in the ICU, and enhanced benefits. The MNA calls the bargain “an enormous achievement” that wouldn’t be possible without community leaders who submitted petitions with more than 1,200 signatures to hospital administrators to support the nurses.

Repealing Regulation

Tomorrow, New Zealand’s government will repeal a pioneering law banning tobacco sales to future generations, scheduled to commence in July. The decision reflects a shift in regulatory strategy by the new coalition government, and it was able to occur without public comment because it was deemed a “matter of urgency.” Despite heavy criticism citing health risks and exacerbating smoking inequalities with Maori and Pasifika populations, the government aims to explore a “different regulatory approach” to reduce smoking rates.

IVF Protections

Both chambers of the Alabama Legislature passed legislation to protect patients and medical professionals from legal liability with in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments. It closely follows a state Supreme Court ruling designating embryos as children, which received bipartisan national opposition and sparked a rally in support of IVF outside the statehouse. Two days before the Alabama bill passed, Mississippi Republican Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith blocked a bill to protect IVF access nationwide.
