Striking in Michigan |
Nurses with the Michigan Nurses Association at ProMedica Hickman Hospital voted overwhelmingly (98%) to authorize a strike amid contract negotiations. Their most recent contract expired on December 31. The nurses accuse ProMedica of seeking major concessions to nursesβ retirement, offering subpar wages, lacking financial transparency,
and engaging in unlawful, anti-union practices (for which the union has filed charges). The hospital expects to stay open during a strike.Β

A Three for MarijuanaΒ |
In a 250-page review, federal scientists recommend removing marijuana from the tightly controlled Schedule I drug category. The FDA and National Institute on Drug Abuse suggest reclassifying marijuana as a Schedule III drug β alongside ketamine and testosterone, which are available by prescription β due to lower risk and potential medical benefits.
While marijuana abuse does occur, it doesnβt often result in serious outcomes, the review acknowledges. President Biden supports re-examining classification, considering its disproportionate impact on specific communities. The Drug Enforcement Agency is expected to announce its decision in the coming months.
