Nurse Managers and RN Retention |
During the pandemic, Memorial Healthcare System in Florida noticed an increase in nurse managers leaving their roles, so they took action, creating a nurse manager council to address
retention issues. The council, rooted in a 2017 strategic plan, focuses on improving the work environment, assessing competencies, and enhancing onboarding. Initiatives like a flexible 40-hour work schedule and standardized onboarding have reduced nursing turnover from nearly 17% to less than 6% and achieved a 94% retention rate for nurse residents!

ED Nurses Cry Foul |
The Emergency Nurses Association urged the American College of Emergency Physicians to delay its ED accreditation program rollout (which is set to accept applications this spring), arguing it prioritizes physician-driven standards and marginalizes nurses' roles. The nurses criticized the framework for not recognizing the contributions of nurses, nurse practitioners, and advanced practice nurses, raised concerns about its impact on patient care, and called for an interdisciplinary emergency care team review of the framework and goals of the accreditation program.

MAP OF THE MODERN NURSEΒ WITH DEBRIEFING THE FRONT LINES
|
Dangerous Safe Havens |
Patient care is not why nurses leave. Nurses leave because institutional betrayal perpetuates Cumulative Care Taking Trauma. Basic care has been lostβthis is not nursing. Deconstructing institutional betrayal in healthcare involves identifying the underlying factors contributing to these harmful dynamics. Though institutional betrayal has overwhelmed our profession, we donβt have to accept it as the lasting legacy of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Join DTFL for our May CE Workshop, Dangerous Safe Havens: Deconstructing Institutional Betrayal, as we:Β
Examine statistics specific to the nursing workforce related to retention efforts and well-being.
Explore how individuals can be a healing source in breaking the institutional betrayal cycle.Β
Discuss corrective actions and antidotes in (re)building trust within the healthcare system from a trauma-informed perspective.
Identify the relationship between institutional betrayal, institutional courage, and aspirations for the future of nursing.Β
Utilize education, self-reflection, and peer support to foster individual and collective healing in commUNITY.
