Whatβs in a (Hospital) Name?

On Monday, nurses and community members in St. Louis protestedΒ outside a new hospital, charging that the hospitalβs planned name violates a trademark and appropriates the name for profit without permission. The name in question? Homer G. Phillips, a lawyer who campaigned for the city to fund a hospital for Black communities before being shot and killed in 1931. The original hospital bearing Phillipsβ name closed in 1979.

Should a nurse practitioner who earned a doctorate have the right to use the title βdoctorβ? Californian DNP, Jacqueline Palmer, believes so. She and two other DNPs are suing the California attorney general and the heads of the California Medical Board and Board of Registered Nursing over a California law that reserves the title only
for physicians and surgeons. Palmer took action after the state fined Sarah Erny, DNP, $2500 plus a $20,000 legal settlement for using the title.
