Neonatology Pioneer Dies

Dr. Philip Sunshine, a Stanford physician and pioneer of neonatology, died at age 94. He helped transform care for premature infants in the 1960s, introducing lifesaving practices and advocating for neonatal ICUs. His work led to improved survival rates and greater federal support for neonatal research. Sunshine, who retired from neonatal care in 2022, was also well-loved by his nurse colleagues, whom he gave more autonomy to and emboldened to speak up about patient issues, improving not only patient outcomes but also doctor-nurse relationships.

Nurses Prepare for Post-Acute Care

The American Association of Post-Acute Care Nursing and Chamberlain University—the largest nursing school in the country—have partnered to launch a free, 24-week post-acute care course aimed at addressing workforce shortages and preparing nursing students for the field’s complexities. Debuting this fall, the program is part of Chamberlain’s Practice Ready Specialty Focus initiative, which offers students specialty training and clinical experience in one of five nursing specialties: emergency, home health, nephrology, perioperative, and oncology. Georgia State University and UMass Boston also have partnerships focused on building careers in long-term care.

5 Minutes = Better Brain Health

As we age, brain volume shrinks and neurotransmitter levels drop, leading to cognitive decline. But a recent study found that just 5 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily—jogging, brisk walking, swimming, dancing, etc.—can potentially keep the aging brain healthy and boost brain functions, including processing speed, working memory, and executive function. Experts note that longer bouts of exercise are better, and we still need more accessible exercise options for those with physical limitations like arthritis.

Attract Opportunities That Match Your Worth

In today's competitive healthcare landscape, your nursing expertise is invaluable and in high demand. But is your digital presence working as hard as you do during a 12-hour shift? An optimized Indeed profile can help connect you with roles that align with your skills, experience, and career aspirations.

Three quick updates can improve your results:

  1. First, add your salary requirements to filter out positions that don't respect your financial worth.

  2. Second, showcase your specialized certifications and clinical experience to attract targeted opportunities.

  3. Third, make yourself  "Searchable on Indeed" so the right employers can discover you before you even click "apply."

Think of your Indeed profile as your job search assistant! Job seekers who apply to healthcare jobs are 25% more likely to be hired in healthcare if they have at least one occupation or preferred occupation in their Indeed profile.1 This means more quality opportunities coming to you, saving you valuable time in your job search.

Healthcare is constantly evolving. Your career options should too! Visit the Careers in Care nursing hub today to refresh your profile and let better nursing opportunities find their way to you.
