CNA Language Woes

Massachusetts (and the rest of the US) is grappling with a crippling shortage of certified nursing assistants. Tapping immigrant experience is one potential avenue for improving the situation, but some immigrants, despite having clinical experience, struggle with the English-language portion of the CNA exam and are forced to take it multiple times before passing. Efforts in MA are underway to address these challenges, including offering the certification exam in Spanish, Chinese, and Haitian Creole starting July 1st.

Fly Fear-Free

Affecting some 25 million US adults, aerophobia, also known as aviophobia, is the extreme fear of flying in an airplane. Knowing that the actual lifetime odds of dying on a plane in the US are incredibly small won’t necessarily calm your nerves, but these expert-backed psychological tricks might. These include stamping out fear with knowledge through pilot-produced explainer videos about flying, journaling positive phrases, and using tapping (aka the Emotional Freedom Technique) to reduce stress and anxiety.

Self-Collected HPV Test

Seeking to expand cervical cancer screening, the FDA has approved a new self-collection method β€” for the previously approved Onclarity HPV test by BD β€”Β that will allow women to gather HPV test samples at primary-care offices, urgent-care clinics, and pharmacies. Advocates hope it will particularly benefit women of color and those in underserved areas, and the FDA may soon approve at-home collection methods as well. Studies show self-collection is effective and it’s already approved in Europe and Australia.
