Hero to National Guardsman

In a special ceremony, Washington state National Guard members honored Providence-Swedish travel nurse Megan Williams as a hero for saving the life of National Guardsman Specialist Shaun Peterson. While driving on a highway, Williams saw a military vehicle slam into another vehicle and flip over. She rushed to help two guardsmen who were trapped. Peterson was unconscious and struggling to breathe from major injuries. Williams crawled inside the vehicle and stopped his bleeding by using a seatbelt as a tourniquet, stabilizing him until emergency responders arrived.Β Β

Vaccinate Healthcare Personnel?

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, the American Nurses Association, and more than a dozen other healthcare organizations are pushing for vaccination mandates. In an open letter to state leadership, the coalition says that it believes all healthcare personnel providing services in any healthcare setting should be required to receive all vaccinations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), including Covid-19 vaccines. They’re also urging state political leaders to work with public health agencies to disseminate accurate information about vaccine efficacy/effectiveness and risks.Β

Taking the Plunge

Plunging into chilly water β€” whether frigid lake or backyard ice bath β€” has gained popularity in recent years, but is that a good thing? Ice bath practitioners claim profound improvements in anxiety and overall mental well-being, with some benefits for metabolic health, immune system function, and inflammation. Science hasn’t caught up to the trend, but some researchers say the ideas behind the effects are plausible. Benefits to inflammation and mental health, for instance, might be due to the release of anti-inflammatory markers and adrenaline and noradrenaline.

Recognizing Humanness Through Compassionate Latitude

Defined by the Heart Math Institute, compassionate latitude carries the understanding that most are doing their best considering personal challenges and stress overload. Compassionate latitude increases our care and flexibility with others’ shortcomings, recognizing that everyone is experiencing challenges and mental health highs and lows in our thoughts and feelings.

  • Practicing compassionate latitude allows for consideration and understanding that we as humans can fall short in our choices, words, or actions when enduring stress that others aren’t aware of, which causes one to feel isolated and alone. Compassionate latitude invites us to recognize humanness, practice patience, and encourage a deeper understanding of another’s situation.Β

  • Imagine living in a post-pandemic world that wasn’t so quick to judge one another.Β
