Healthcare starts with you. This is your beat.

☀️ Happy FriYAY TNB fam!

It’s really important for our organization to give back to nurses doing incredible things in the community! This year, for Nurses Week, we are co-sponsoring the Operation Happy Nurse (OHN) concert in San Diego with CeraVe and L’Oréal Paris where Social House will be headlining on May 12th!

OHN is a non-profit founded by NICU nurse Shannon McPeek that helps nurses struggling with stress, anxiety, and/or depression by offering a community focused on improving mental health and physical well-being overall.

We are giving away  🎟️ three pairs of tickets 🎟️ to some lucky nurses in the Southern California area to see the show! Click here to enter to win! We can’t wait to see you there!

Stay safe. Be healthy. Be kind.

MORNING BRIEF 🍳 ☕️

American Samoa Measles Outbreak a Public Health Emergency

The US territory of American Samoa issued a public health emergency in response to a measles outbreak. The outbreak includes one laboratory-confirmed case of measles among an 8-year-old, along with 31 suspected or probable cases, according to the territory’s Department of Health. The 30-day emergency declaration is set to expire on May 24th.

American Samoa’s Department of Education closed all schools until May 12th. As of April 22nd, 89% of students in daycares, elementary schools, and high schools received both doses of the MMR vaccines. In addition, several clinics, halls, and churches will offer MMR vaccines for those six months and older, intending to raise the vaccination rate to 95 to 100% of school-age children.

The last measles outbreak in American Samoa occurred in 2019. There were 12 confirmed cases and no deaths.

Nurse Doesn’t Let Vacation Status Stop Her from Saving Lives

For many nurses and other healthcare providers, the work doesn’t end when the shift ends because you never know when someone might require help. Texas nurse Faryn Rogers just graduated from nursing school last year but has already learned this fact. While on vacation in South Florida with her family, Rogers mentally donned her scrubs and helped save a man who was a victim of a violent attack.

Rogers and her family were at a Burgers & Shakes restaurant when someone yelled for help, specifically asking for napkins for someone outside who was bloody. The victim had been stabbed twice on the beach before stumbling to the restaurant. Rogers immediately knew that the napkins provided weren’t nearly enough, but luckily a customer offered up her pants. Rogers fashioned a tourniquet from the pants, laid him down, and held pressure on the wounds until paramedics arrived.

Tired Before a Night Shift? Get Some Bright Light First

Shift work can be hard on the body by affecting circadian rhythms, resulting in fatigue, sleep issues, and workplace errors. But there is a simple way to reduce these effects of night shift work: improving circadian alignment. For example, a study in Sleep Health has found that work shift nurses feel less tired and have fewer work errors if they receive at least 40 minutes of bright light before their shift.

In the study, nurses working night shifts at McGill University Health Centre made 21 errors, such as giving incorrect medications, over a 10-day observation period. But the number of errors dropped to 7 — a 67% reduction — when the nurses were exposed to 40 minutes of bright light from portable light boxes before their shifts. A similar McGill study reported a 62% reduction in errors following light exposure, according to ScrubsMag

DAILY DIVERSION 💊

The Maude Abbott Medical Museum at McGill University in Montreal houses collections dating back to the early 19th century. These include various specimens retrieved from autopsies, some of which document pathologic abnormalities that became study topics at the university. In fact, the museum currently has an exhibit illustrating what happens when normal embryonic development goes awry.

🤯 ONE BIG NUMBER

600,000

Under the new House Republican debt bill, about 600,000 people would become uninsured due to Medicaid work requirements. See the report to learn the flip side: how much the federal government would save by making Medicaid recipients work 80 hours a month.
