Rugby players will soon be sporting fancy new mouthguards to help detect head injuries. The global governing body World Rugby announced they’re investing $2 million in smart mouthguard technology. These high-tech mouthguards can identify dangerous hits to the head in real-time and send alerts to doctors on the
sidelines. No more waiting for obvious concussion symptoms or replay reviews - medical staff will know instantly if a worrisome impact occurred.
As nurses, we know how crucial early detection is for traumatic brain injuries. Kudos to World Rugby for taking proactive steps to improve player safety. (Ahem, NFL; I’m calling you out!) While professional rugby leagues have the budget for this advanced equipment, it’s a good reminder that simple mouthguards can make recreational sports safer, too. So, don’t forget those mouthguards next time you’re cheering on kids at an impact sports game. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
