What Gold Can’t Buy

If you grew up in the 80s, you might remember American champion Mary Lou Retton — the Olympic gymnast who won one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals in 1984 — asking you to eat your Wheaties. Nearly four decades later, her daughter is crowdfunding to pay Retton’s medical bills. Like 27.5 million other Americans, Retton is uninsured in the country with the world’s highest healthcare prices. Though Retton has raised eight times her goal, most patients never meet their goals.

Returning from Retirement

California will begin issuing a new kind of nursing license specifically for retired nurses after Governor Gavin Newsom signed the bill that creates the new licenses on October 8. The new licenses will have lower renewal fees and be exempt from continuing education credits but can only be used to provide limited nursing services, ostensibly during emergencies or shortages.

Staffing Ratios Round-Up

We’ve been trying to keep you updated on the shifting legislative landscape around nurse staffing ratios — a rapidly moving target that nursing unions are pushing for just as hard as hospitals are pushing against. Since Oregon passed its safe staffing bill in August, similar efforts have failed in Minnesota and Washington. To get a sense of where things stand nationally and what the research says, check out this special feature at MedPage Today

TECH TUESDAY WITH NURSE MANNY

Smart Mouthguard Tech

Rugby players will soon be sporting fancy new mouthguards to help detect head injuries. The global governing body World Rugby announced they’re investing $2 million in smart mouthguard technology. These high-tech mouthguards can identify dangerous hits to the head in real-time and send alerts to doctors on the sidelines. No more waiting for obvious concussion symptoms or replay reviews - medical staff will know instantly if a worrisome impact occurred.

As nurses, we know how crucial early detection is for traumatic brain injuries. Kudos to World Rugby for taking proactive steps to improve player safety. (Ahem, NFL; I’m calling you out!) While professional rugby leagues have the budget for this advanced equipment, it’s a good reminder that simple mouthguards can make recreational sports safer, too. So, don’t forget those mouthguards next time you’re cheering on kids at an impact sports game. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

It's like rotating through different hospital departments and gaining a bit from each!

Are you eager to dive in? Learn how Nurse Taylor uses index funds, specifically VTI, to save her time and make her more money.
