As a child, Grace Carr wrapped her dolls in bandages and took their temperatures. Nearly a century later, she’s still working at St. Luke’s Sacred Heart Campus in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the same hospital where she began training as a nurse at age 17, during World War II. Now age 97, Carr has actually been retired for 35 years, but she continued volunteering at the hospital after retirement, logging more than 6,000 hours as a volunteer. Read her remarkable story.

Tainted Drugs? |
The FDA discovered last month that studies supporting new drug applications from Synapse Labs Pvt. Ltd., a research organization in India, had questionable or fraudulent data. The data supported the safety and efficacy of more than 400 drugs available in the U.S., yet the FDA is allowing the drugs to remain on the market while they’re retested—despite the European counterpart to the FDA recommending suspension of the drugs.

Insufficient Warning |
It’s near impossible to buy a pack of cigarettes in the U.S. without seeing the Surgeon General’s health warning about their harms, a regulation that’s withstood recent court challenges. Yet look for a similar warning for alcohol and you may need a magnifying glass. Even then, you’ll only read about the risks of drinking while driving and during pregnancy. Health advocates argue that needs to change, especially given how much more
we know about alcohol’s harms to all body systems.

Pay Transparency in Nursing |
Pay transparency is a growing demand across industries, including healthcare.
Applicants want to know the compensation for a job before applying for a position. Thanks to pay transparency laws, job seekers in 10 states currently see the wage or salary of a role in the job posting.
Why is pay transparency important? Pay transparency supports pay equity, which is still a big issue in nursing. Becker’s recently highlighted gender pay disparities in nursing, which shocked me. As a former ED nurse, I’m not easy to shock.
No transparency laws in your state? Try this:
Research nurse wages in your area on websites like Glassdoor or search the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics website.
Ask someone. Snoop around on social media nursing groups and ask about pay for facilities. Do this anonymously whenever possible to avoid problems with potential employers.
Explore growing platforms like Bluem, where nurses will be able to anonymously report their wages.
